Remix Culture v.1 - 1.2

To start, my understanding of Remix Culture is to create something from another's work, as a sort of step to randomize and make new the world around us.

I had so much fun with this assignment! There were, admittedly, a few very challenging hurdles that I had to jump (i.e trying to learn Meshmixer, file sizes, and the general dimensions of objects just to name a few). In the end, I was able to overcome these issues and create a series of 11 remixes for you to enjoy.

Disclaimer: All of these titles were created in Tinkercad while the creation was still fresh in my mind. This is a NO JUDGEMENT ZONE :) thank you and enjoy

1. Butter-Deer

Butterfly

Deer

As soon as I came across the butter fly I knew that I wanted to change the head. The deer head was the first thing that popped into my mind so I used it. It required a bit of tinkering in Meshmixer (I removed the antenna from the original butterfly and had to decrease the file size for the deer head)

2. Take a drink from my hat

Hat

I was wearing a hat at the time of its creation (not a top had sadly) and beside me was the remnants of a smoothie that I had for lunch. The combination of these two worked great. I created the straw in Tinkercad.

3. Rat race

Guitar

Runner

I have a guitar hanging on my wall at home and I am a long distance runner. I thought that the neck of the guitar looked just like a lane for runners so I decided that it might be fun to combine the two. I created the finish line in Tinkercad.

4. Get to the chopper

Banana

Copter

This idea started with a banana (something that I should have out into my smoothie from earlier but I honestly didn’t want to run to the store just for that). Along with that I remembered a channel that I follow on instagram where the general idea of the content is breaking balloons with random objects (anywhere from knives to banana’s) so I thought it would be an interesting idea to combine the two. Although I wasn’t able to actually find a balloon I found this thing called a ‘LOLCOPTER’ as a substitute and it worked perfectly for what I needed.

5. Fight night

Wrestling ring

Shark

Boxing gloves

This came as a random thought as I was waking up one morning. admittely it did take a bit longer than normal to make because it was really hard to find a proper shark on thingiverse. The one that I originally had (no matter how much I changed the sizing, etc.) would continuously max out the heigh limit on Tinkercad, thus making it unusable.

6. Paul from sales

Octopus

Hat

Briefcase

This was an idea that was brought about through conversation with a friend. The original character had a full suit as well but I wasn’t able to make that work with thingiverse objects.

7. 2 minutes for charging

Buffalo

Helmet

From thinking about sports I remembered back to when I used to attend football games with my Dad. The buffalo came from other memories of being with him in Medicine Hat, viewing the Teepee and seeing these beautiful creatures roaming around the valley below us.

8. Plants vs. OBDF 110A

Peashooter

Cup

Throw back to the days of playing Plants Vs. Zombies. I used the coffee cup because of the fact that I was drinking coffee at the time of creation. I had to reduce the file size via changing the amount of triangles present in the Peashooter which is why the quality is so tragic. I added the pea being shot out in Tinkercad just to add to the overall effect.

9. Monsieur Bow

Bow

Glasses

Bowtie

The idea for this creation came about while I was watching a friend play as Hou Yi in the video game, Smite. I knew from there that I wanted to make use of the bow and further was pondering on how I would be able to make it into a character.  While looking for a bow that Tinkercad would accept (file size and height restrictions seem to be my demise) I came across many bowtie’s -so in a weak effort to design a play on words, I decided to include that as well. Being that I was already into the stages of making this bow into a character I knew it needed some sort of facial structure so I automatically thought about the ‘Groucho Glasses’ with the eye brows and nose. Although I wasn’t able to find exactly that on Thingiverse, I was able to find a pair of the Lorax glasses that worked just as well; thus, making my simple bow in a creature.

10. Fly me to the moon

Wings

Arrow

This idea, admittedly, came about at the same time as the Bow Creature. While still in the mindset of wanting to play with words, I thought about the arrow that is shot from the bow and how it flies through the air. When I think about flying, the first item that I think about are wings. Thus I created an arrow with wings.

11. Wat R Those

Heels

Light Bulb

This idea was entirely random. I was wracking my brain for something original and all I could think about was a lamp. I immediately looked at my shoes and decided that it would work well as the base (through searching for shoes I was only able to find a set of heels on Thingiverse). If I wanted to make it a lamp I knew that the lightbulb was necessary to complete the idea (oddly enough this was also the only realistic representation of a lightbulb that I was able to find).

Congratulations on reaching the end! I really hope you enjoyed those remixes as much as I did.

Until next time,

Folding Things - 1.7

For this assignment, my idea was to explore varying difficulties of objects just to see, formally speaking, what can be made and how things fit together while still maintaining a planar surface. I used this assignment purely for the purposes of practice and ideation for the next stage, taking the time to seek out different opportunities. Without further ado, these are my geometric creations: 1. I knew that I wanted to start with something simple to give myself room for building. This is a simple square rotated on top of another square, connected using the loft feature. Because it was an easier creation I wanted to show a couple different ways of unwrapping it. 2.  Moving into more complex shapes, I still wanted to maintain, roughly, the same difficulty as the previous creation. Again, because of the simplicity, here are two ways of unwrapping it. 3. Here is where things started to get more complicating. I added more layers. The unrolling process was a bit more difficult than the pr...

Refined and Dignified - 1.3

Mesh Mashup V.2 Welcome back to another edition of the mesh mashup madness. The contents that lie herein give each viewer a sneak peek into the thoughts that take over my mind every day; don't worry, it's all rated PG. For this portion of the assignment I chose to use my previous design entitled 'Get to the Chopper,' where there were three bananas suspended from an aircraft. To further that design I decided to take the input that I was given in the group critique (more will be explained below) and expand upon it. I am super excited for you to see what I made and the steps that I took to get there. First, I want to show the original. This idea came about while watching a very outlandish instagram reel where a man does very peculiar things with bananas (again, its not dirty).  The feedback that I had received on this piece was to add movement. It was mentioned that I would be able to form the ropes in such a way as to look like they are moving in the wind or to even go s...

I did all that!? - 1.12

This is the end *cries in rhino7* I will truly miss the work put in and the objects designed! There is good news though (some could call it a light at the end -or start- of the tunnel) - this is only the beginning of our creative journey. The years that we get to be excited about and the times when we will create our best works are still ahead. Let us breathe in the pandemic fresh air and exhale deeply, simultaneously speaking life into our journey.  OBJECTIFIED I fell in love with some random chair that showed up in one of the scenes of the video (pictured here in the bottom right). When I tried to re-create it, I found that there were too many tapering edges for Tinkercad to be able to comprehend. I was convinced that I knew exactly what I was doing and that it was going to work out perfectly; in the bottom left of this image you can see how far my attempts got me. I changed gears and thought of changing the shape of the chair (this attempt is seen in the upper right). After hour...
